Old News 2008
Is old news, technically, news? Good question.
Regardless, here you can find old news items removed from the Home page (most recent first).

Indoor Is On! And Other Small Issues
The first indoor session went very well in the new venue. It's so good to be local again.
Thanks to all who came out and to those who came from afar.
If you weren't able to make it, come along, it would be great to see you there!
It's very different to outdoor, it's fast, furious and great for burning of those winter blues.
The next session is on Sunday 30th November 10:30am-1:30pm, again at the
Stanley Deason Leisure Centre
on Wilson Road in East Brighton.
In other news, we have at least 4 Beachcombers preparing to run the Sussex Beacon Half Marathon on February 22nd.
Let us know if you want to join us!

The One And Only Indoor Tournament Of The Winter
I know the Calendar page isn't up to date yet, so bear with me:
Every winter we enter on indoor tournament: the Tom Prince Indoor Softball Tournament, in aid of the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.
This time it will be on January 4th (yes, just after New Year) at the usual place, the
Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.
Put it in your calendar and let's start practicing for it at indoor tomorrow!
Last year we came 2nd, so we want to win it this time!

Indoor! At Last! Get Your Calendars Out
Firstly, thanks to all who came to the election night last Tuesday, bringing food, drink
and lively discussion about the USA electoral system. In case you didn't hear, the old man
lost and the black man won.
Next, we finally have the dates for Indoor Softball! In the words of our co-president
Sarah:
Okay, so it's cold, dark and hibernating under a duvet and feeding yourself comfort food
sounds like a very good idea.
We say no to hibernation and have organised a programme of indoor softball
to keep you lithe and supple during the winter months.
We've managed to source a local venue (hurrah!),
the
Stanley Deason Leisure Centre
in East Brighton,
and we're looking to start on Sunday 16th November, 10:30am-1:30pm.
Dust off your softball gloves....indoor has landed!
I would just like to add to that: IT IS AT STANLEY DEASON IN BRIGHTON.
If you (and by "you" I am thinking of a couple of members who never pay attention to these things)
fail to notice that and turn up in Henfield, expect NO sympathy from me. :)
So here are the dates. You'll notice I haven't updated the Calendar section of the site
yet, so refer to this list!

Social This Week: Movie And Election Night This Tuesday!
Short notice, but how do you like the sound of this:
We've talked in the past about getting together to watch some classic baseball movie,
so why not combine it with USA election night this Tuesday 4th?
We need:
-
A venue: We can do it at Sarah and Martin's, but open to suggestions for
places with more room or beefier home cinemas.
-
A movie: We have plenty of transatlantic players on the team with strong
opinions on which is the ultimate American baseball movie,
so who's the first to suggest a good one?
-
Some food: Popcorn? Pretzels? Churros? Doritos? Ribs? Burgers with iffy cheese?
Let's figure out how we want to do this.
-
A time: if we time things right, we want to grab food and watch a movie
(or two?) finishing by midnight, by which time the polls will close in some key
states so we should have a good idea whether the old guy or the black guy is going to win!
Who's up for it? Martin is organising this one,
so let him know ASAP.

Quick Satisfaction Survey
BSUK is the development agency for baseball and softball in the United Kingdom.
As part of its arrangements for funding with Sport England for next four years,
it needs to measure and improve the level of "satisfaction" experienced by participants in baseball and softball.
Please complete this ONE QUESTION survey
(which will take you about 1 minute!) to express your view.
The survey will be open until midnight on Wednesday 22nd October, so get on with it!

The End Of A Great 2008 Season
Just a few words to say that the end of season meal
at the Eastern Eye
last Saturday was a great success!
We had a fantastic turnout of about 26 club members
keen to chomp on some curry and reminisce about
the fun times of one of the best seasons this club has ever had.
A couple of long-time members of the club commented about the amount of new
faces around the table, and they are right:
it is great to see so many new people picking up softball
and making the team so fun and so succesful.
It is a testament to the hard work that everyone has put into organising
and participating in this season.
Before this piece gets too sentimental, let's not forget how the night ended,
with some of the lowest-class whiskey tasting I have ever seen. Messy.
And so, enjoy your short Autumn break, and look forward to
indoor softball, winter season training, half-marathon running and all those great things
that will keep us going until Spring. Announcements to come!
2008-10-06
End Of Season Party, Wehey!
We laughed, we cried, we got drunk and fell over...
Time to look back over the season and have a good ol' knees up!
- time: Sat Oct 11th, 730 pm
- venue: Eastern Eye on London Road
We've booked for 20 so could you please RSVP with
Becky
ASAP?
And by the way, if you didn't receive this information
through email on September 28th, we don't have your email address!
Get in touch and fix that!

Beachcombers at the 2009 Sussex Beacon Half Marathon?
The 2008 Half Marathon saw a few Beachcombers take-up their running
shoes through the bleak winter months and run this 13 mile
course through Brighton and Hove and beyond.
For 2009 we'd like to get a bigger team together.
It's for a great cause and a great way to keep in shape out of the sofball season.
Please contact Sarah
if you'd like to run for the Beachcombers.
For more information go to:
www.beaconhalf.org.uk.

Last League Game Tomorrow!
We're playing our last league game tomorrow at Preston Park,
starting at 11:00.
Becky
is running the show, so get in touch with her if you want to play (there may
still be places, you never know).
And of course, you can always pop down to say hi and support our troops!

of what's going on!

SPECIAL Training Session On Tuesday With Guest Coach!
Baseball Softball UK will be kindly bringing

This is a training session for intermediate/advanced players, especially our Nationals team.

Not going to the Nationals? Why not play At The Really Scary Tournament Surrey Instead?
Sunday 7th September, Leigh Surrey.
The Really Scary Tournament is played in Leigh,
a typical English village nestled in the heart of the Surry countryside.
As defending champions we've been asked if we want to play.
Our Nationals team will be working hard to represent the South-East but,
should any of you want to strut your orange stuff and play for other teams
there are spaces for you.
For you keen players who have joined this year,
it's an excellent opportunity to play with and against other teams
- you won't find a friendlier tournament!
Please let us know by Monday if you want to play.

Extra Practices
Well done to the select few who came out yesterday to end their
bank holiday weekend with some batting practice.
And tut-tut to those who said they'd come and didn't turn up!
Unfortunately we can't run another practice tonight because the field
at Preston Park is in use, so the next softball session will
be tomorrow, Wednesday, at the usual time of 6pm.
If you want me to keep you informed of any extra practices we organise,
get in touch.
Martin.
2008-08-25
Practice today? Tomorrow?
Right, so we said we'd be doing some basic batting practice today,
and maybe some Nationals practice tomorrow... so is it going to happen?
Well, we've got the slight snag that the person who has the key to our kit lockup
is aimlessly roaming the streets of Brighton after a heavy Beachdown festival...
I don't want to name names, but if we manage to track Tor
down and get the key off her, we'll be going out to hit some balls at Preston Park
at 17:00 or thereabouts.
If you're interested, call Martin
so we can keep you posted. Otherwise you risk turning up for nothing!

Watch The Olympic Softball Final!
I know this is VERY short notice, but at 17:00 they will be broadcasting the final of the women's olympic softball
on the BBC.
Well, "on the BBC" is not quite that simple.
It's being broadcast
between 17:00 and 19:30 on BBC Satellite/Cable 5. I think that means that you can watch it by pressing the
red button on Freview if if you get your Freview through cable of satellite only.
If not, you can watch it online right now!
GO HERE and click on Softball on the right!
If you fancy getting to gether at someone's house and watching, call me ASAP on 07776328757. Martin.
2008-08-13
More Softball!
You may have heard the rumors that we're running extra practices
to make sure our C Nationals squad is ready to bring home some silverware.
Not only that, but a lot of players have been asking if we can run small
practices or loan out equipment so they can go down the park and work on their skills.
Fancy it? Email coach Martin
if you're interested!
Once we have an idea of interest, the plan is to do a couple of supervised sessions
before making the kit accessible so you can go play whenever you want.
Two important notes though:
-
We can only let you use the kit unsupervised if we are confident that
you will be safe with it.
-
Any extra sessions are in addition to regular Wednesday practices: our Wendesday
practices are what keep this club going, so you must still turn up on Wednesdays.

We're Back To Preston Park!
Pride is now over, and we're done getting bitten by mosquitoes, midges, gnats or
whatever they were, so it's back to our home field on Preston Park from
tomorrow, Wednesday August 6th until the end of the season.
6pm start. Hope to see you there!
2008-08-05
Midball Imminent, Heads up!
It's here, our very own tournament in Brighton. Well almost, it's a catch-up of league games.
We're still finalising the teams but if you want to play please contact Sarah asap,
and if you want to spectate please head down to Waterhall on Sunday 10th for 10am.
If you have no idea where Midball is, here's a map.

take a left at the roundabout when you're heading out of town by the garage.

Want Some More?
You may have heard the rumors that we're running extra practices
to make sure our C Nationals squad is ready to bring home some silverware.
Good news! You don't have to be playing in the Nationals to come along:
if you aren't getting enough ball action on Wednesdays, let coach
Martin know by email or phone and we'll
put keep you informed on when we'll be out doing more 1-to-1 training.
Two notes though:
-
These sessions are in addition to regular Wednesday practices: our Wendesday
practices are what keep this club going, so you must still turn up on Wednesdays
if you come to the extra sessions.
-
Although I will try and make sure everyone gets personal training at these sessions,
priority will be given to players going to the Nationals. You know it makes sense.
So, if you want to come to these sessions, let Martin know.
And if you are playing in the Nationals, let Martin know when you want to do the next session!
See you on the field.
2008-07-29
Change Of Venue! Pay Attention Now!
Pride is in town, so while they stomp all over our field we're moving
our practices to Hove Park, opposite the basketball court.
We'll resume our normal service at Preston Park as soon as possible;
if in doubt, give us a call!
2008-07-09
Weather Alert
Well, it's been raining on and off all day, and the forecast is rain for the rest of the evening.
Nevertheless a few people are keen to get out there in preparation for Euroball.
I'm not so sure, but I'll be there from 6pm onwards even if it's just to herd people to the
Open House for some tequila and tactics talk.
If in doubt, ring me on 07776 328757 for more information.
Martin.
2008-07-10
Rain? What rain?
It may have been a bit soggy underfoot, but a good half dozen Beachcombers still came
out to hit some bombs into the outfield!
So what's the lesson? Whatever the weather, it's worth getting your arse down to Preston Park
on a wednesday.
2008-07-08
It's a great week for European softball!
In case you hadn't already heard, this week is the
European Slowpitch Softball Championships
in Southampton, just round the corner from Brighton.
The first game starts on Wednesday at 10:00, and the final will be at 14:00 on Saturday 12th.
Check out their site
for more details.
Not only that, the Europeans overlap with the Euroball tournament, which the Beachcombers are entering
on Saturday and Sunday.
Have you let Becky know if you're playing yet?
Not only is it a great tournament at a great venue, you'll get to see the very best European
softball has to offer! It's going to be a huge event with TV coverage.
Martin is heading out there on Friday to watch
more games and soak up the softball vibe, so let him know if you want to share a ride up there!
2008-06-30
Thank you for Taking Part!
The launch of the city's TakePart International Festival of Sport on Saturday was a spectacular triumph.
Both young and old got to have a go and observe all kinds of sports and activities, from capoeira to ice skating, and of course softball.
The Beachcombers put on a softball extravaganza.
Adults and children received some basic coaching courtesy of our softball guru Wendy before stepping up to the plate to bat.
Things got rather competitive in the throwing competition where participants had their throwing speed measured with a speed gun.
We're proud and relieved to say that the Beachcomber's very own Jarod had the fasted throw of the day at 68 mph.
Well done to Kit in the Under 16's category whose throwing speed was clocked at a whopping 49 mph!
It was great to see queues of parents and kids all wanting to get involved and being cheered on
by their friends and families.
The Beachcombers also played two games of softball during the day to entertain onlookers.
There were some great plays in the infield as well as a stunning home run by Paul.
We'd like to say a huge thank you to Brighton and Hove City Council for organising such a great event.
Special thanks goes to Scott, Wendy, Becky, Phil, Sam, Ben, Warren, Amy,
Tabetha and her photographer fiancé, Chris, Julia, Jarod, newcomer Andy, Paul, Jamie, Helen, Lesley for all their help in making the day such a success.
And of course to Sarah for organising and running the event so brilliantly.
If you like what you see and fancy giving it a go, just get in touch and come out to
Preston Park any Wednesday from 6pm.
2008-06-23
Your Softball Team Needs YOU!
TakePart Festival of Sport Saturday 28th June - Preston Park
The Beachcombers are showcasing softball at this international sporting extravaganza and we'd like all Beachcombers to make an appearance, donning their orange t-shirts on the day to show their support.
We need volunteers to help run activities, to inspire members of the public to have a go, to hand out flyers and of course to play some seriously sexy softball.
If you can't make the whole day please come along for 11:30 and 13:45 for the matches, we need at least 20 Beachcombers for each game.
Bring family and friends and tell your colleagues to come along too.
Please let Sarah know asap if you can help out and play. The more the merrier!
If you don't have a t-shirt yet you can buy one at Wednesday's practice for £12.00/£9.00.
Here's The Timetable For The Day:
- 11:00 - 11:30 - Batting practice for all.
- 11:30 - 12:45 - Beachcomber game. Game on, it's Beachcomber V Beachcomber.
- 12:45 - 13:30 - Throwing competition. How fast is your throw?
- 13:30 - 13:45 - Quick break
- 13:45 - 14:45 - Beachcomber game. Revenge match?
- 14:45 - 15:15 - Throwing competition part 2. Reckon you can beat a Beachcomber?
- 15:15 - 16:00 - Batting practice for all.
Sarah is in charge of organising things,
so watch out for the emails and step up to the plate to help!
2008-06-19
All Beachcombers Needed for TAKE PART!
We've decided not to enter the BA Tournament this year,
and instead focus our efforts on the
TAKE PART Festival Of Sport
at Preston Park on Saturday June 28th.
And for that we need YOU!
We're going to try and get as many players as possible
to come out, demonstrate the sport, play a game and
show everyone how much fun this softball is!
Sarah is in charge of organising things,
so watch out for the emails and step up to the plate to help!
2008-06-15
Lots Of Games Coming Up, You Know You Want To!
If you check the Calendar
you'll notice we have 2 league games coming up on the 22nd
and a 2-day tournament on the 28th and 29th of this month.
Lots of opportunities to get out there and play some real softball!
We particularly want to encourage new players who've only played at Wednesday practices
to come and play at these games, because real games are what softball is all about!
All members should have received a couple of emails about these upcoming games
- if you haven't maybe we've got your email address wrong, so get in touch
with Sarah about league games
and Becky about the tournament.
And of course, check out the full season Calendar
and start putting dates in your diary!

TAKE PART Festival Of Sport
Hey guys, the Beachcombers will be running a little show at the
TAKE PART Festival Of Sport
at Preston Park on Saturday June 28th.
Sarah is in charge of this one,

It's curry time!
There was a great turnout at the curry after practice on Wednesday.
The chosen venue was the Raj Pavilion, a great eatery - check out the fiery shashlik!
A couple of photos where Scott managed not to make us look terrible. More photos,
and even a video,
are available here.

Stunning Photos Of Stunning Players
In today's practice we were lucky enough to have the official photographer of the
European Slowpitch Softball Championships,
Chris Galbally,
taking some shots of the team.
Some of the best are on Facebook here
(you don't need to be a member of Facebook to see them), and here's a taster:

Wednesday Already!
The Beachcombers put in a great performance (apparently) at the First Ball last Sunday,
so come out to Preston Park today at 18:00 to find out more!
As every Wednesday, we'll play till the light dies and then head
off to the pub!
If it's your first go at softball, welcome! See you there!
2008-04-22
Outdoor Softball At Last!
Are you as excited as I am about the first outdoor softball at Preston Park of 2008?
Well kids, get yourselves a good night's sleep and see you at Preston Park,
next to the speed camera, tomorrow Wednesday at 18:00. We'll play till the light dies and then head
off to the pub!
We've got a tournament this very weekend, so if you're playing in that we need to make sure
you're ready for it.
And if it's your first go at softball, welcome! See you there!

Last Indoor IS Happening
Looking at the weather in Brighton today and the forecast for tomorrow,
we have decided to head off to Henfield for a last burst of indoor softball.
So get over there for 1pm and make the most of it! If you need a lift,
talk to Sarah.
And remember, this Wednesday 23rd is the first outoor session!
6pm start at Preston Park next to the speed camera. Sun, softball and pub afterwards!
2008-04-15
Indoor Is Coming To An End
I think the Beachcombers are ready for some outdoor softball!
At the indoor last Sunday we ended up out in a muddy field hitting balls into the bushes
(maybe it had to do with the fact that there was a power cut in the indoor hall...).
The last indoor practice is scheduled for this coming Sunday, April 20th 13:00-16:00 at the Henfield Leisure Centre.
However: we've decided that if the weather is looking good for that day,
we'll be playing outdoor in Brighton (probably Preston Park) instead.
So, if you fancy playing softball this Sunday, get in touch with
Sarah on Saturday to check where we'll be!
(PS: weather forecast as of today is light rain.)
2008-04-11
Indoor Softball This Sunday, April 13th!
Indoor Practice - Sunday April 13th 12:00-15:00 Henfield Leisure Centre.
There are only a couple of indoor sessions left before the summer season starts, so get in there while it lasts!
If it's your first time or you need a ride just contact us and we'll sort you out.
See you there!

Watch Out, We Know How To Score!
The scoring clinic on Tuesday was a great success,
with 6 Beachcombers working hard to improve their scorebook skills.
The pizzas, wedges and beer certainly helped!
Of course there has to be a competitive element,
so we split into two teams and set a challenge.
And the winners were...
Amy, Sam and Warren.
And where there are winners, there have to be losers...
Becky, Phil and Sarah: better luck next time.
If you missed the clinic, we should be having a refresher at some point
this season. And now you know the 6 people you can ask if you have any questions!
2008-03-19
Scoring Clinic Coming Up!
Hi guys and girls, we now have a definite date for our first Scoring Clinic of 2008:
Tuesday, March 25th starting at 7pm
So what is it?
It's an evening for us to get together at Martin and Sarah's house, eat some pizza, drink some beer
(or whatever you fancy) and learn how to score a game of softball.
Why would I want to do that?
Well, learning how to score teaches you the rules of the game, and that's got to be a
good thing! Also, if you've ever played a game with us you'll know that at some point
someone is going to throw a score book in your lap and expect you to keep score while they
go and hit the ball into the clubhouse. And some people even find a perverse satisfaction
in the power and responsibility that the game scorer enjoys!
So what will I learn?
We'll start from the very basics, so we can get to the point where everyone can keep track
of what's going on in a game, and then we'll go into the more obscure details of scoring,
all the way to using the score book as a tool to win games!
(I mean by identifying weak spots and making tactical decisions: I'm not going to teach
you to fiddle the book).
The aim of the evening is to make sure we develop a consistent style of scoring for the
mighty Beachcombers.
How can I get involved?
Let Martin know if you'd like to come,
and we'll sort everything else out!
Anything else I should know?
Well, there will be audiovisual aids, props and prizes! Don't miss out!
2008-03-16
Scoring Clinic Rescheduled
Just a quick note: the Scoring Clinic originally planned for Tuesday March 18th has been moved
to Wednesday March 26th, so put that in your diaries and let
Martin know if you'd like to come.
2008-03-16
Welcome Sport Reliefers!
Our girls Sarah, Wendy, Becky and Emma did a great despite the bad weather
to promote softball and the Beachcombers on Brighton seafront today. Well done!
As a result, hopefully there will be a few new faces reading this. If you are new to the site, welcome!
Have a look around the site, ignore the missing bits, and get ready to play some ball!
The next indoor session in Henfield is on Sunday April 13th (a bit of a wait, sorry).
In the meantime, you can have a look at our
indoor rules guide
to get ready.
Do let us know you're coming and we'll
sort out lifts etc nearer the time.
2008-03-15
Something Different This Sunday
Those of you who have checked the Calendar
will be aware that indoor this Sunday (March 16th) has been CANCELLED.
So don't turn up at Henfield because there'll be no one there!
This is because instead, we are going to be manning a stall at the
Sport Relief
event taking place on Madeira Drive on Brighton Seafront.
If you are thinking of trying softball out,
come down and visit us and find out what it is we do. See you there!

An Act Of Kindness
Not only did 3 of the Beachcombers run the Brighton Sussex Beacon Half Marathon a couple of weeks ago,
but one of them was just using it as a warmup for the London Marathon!
Emma McGrath, our Welsh rookie of 2007, will be running the full 26 miles in 6 weeks' time.
She ate up the Sussex Beacon in 1h51', so we have no doubt that she'll be teaching the streets of
London a lesson.
And she's not just doing it to increase her speed round the bases, it's all for a good cause:
All money raised will go to Link Community Development,
the charity that supported my work at a rural school in South Africa in 2006.
The school had very little, with many 'classrooms' lacking roofs or furniture.
Please, please, please sponsor me.
It's really easy - you can donate online by credit or debit card at the following address:
http://www.justgiving.com/emmamcgrath
So come on Beachcombers, let's give our girl some support on this one.
If we donate enough cash, maybe she'll crab-walk across the finish line for us!

Beachcombers Join Sport Relief 2008!
The UK’s gone sports mad for this Olympic year, and as part of the build up to London 2012
you can expect to see sports feature high on the agenda…which is good news for the Beachcombers.
For starters, we're going take part in the
Sport Relief event weekend,
from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th March.
On Sunday 16th March we will be promoting softball on Madeira Drive:
if you are thinking of trying softball out,
come down and visit us and find out what it is we do. See you there!
And if you're an existing Beachcomber,
we want you to get involved by running in the
Sport Relief Mile run
on the same day! Please email Sarah to say you can take part.

Beachcombers get sponsored!
It’s official – we've been given a generous £400.00 by
Cactus Worldwide Ltd,
a local language training company that is a world leader in all things language.
This money will be carefully spent on new kit,
and generally to make your softball life better.
Treasurer John receiving the cheque from Cactus representative Sarah.
A representative of Cactus had the following kind words to say.
With an office full of sporty men and women,
Cactus Worldwide Limited jumped at the chance to support
local softball team the Brighton Beachcombers.
With the European Championships being held in Southampton this June,
2008 this is the year of softball for the UK.
Cactus wishes the Brighton Beachcombers and the GB softball team the very
best of luck over the coming season!

Thinking of buying a new bat this year?
Make sure you check the 2008 banned bats list before you part with your hard-earned cash.
to view the list, courtesy of BSUK (that's Baseball Softball UK to you).
If you are planning to buy a bat, make sure you talk to our beloved Head Coach
Martin first:
you don't want to end up with an expensive burglar deterrent!

Beachcombers Come Oh So Close In Portsmouth
Ah, the first tournament of 2008, and also the only indoor tournament on our calendar.
8 slightly lethargic Beachcombers drove over to the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth
to compete in the Tom Prince Indoor Softball Tournament, in aid of the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.
Find out how it went in the Results page.

Annual General Meeting Announcement
Dear Beachcombers, it is once again time for our AGM, where our members are welcome to
express their views about the direction the club will take in 2008.
We have picked the date for this AGM:
Tuesday January 22nd
We haven't set a time or a place as these will depend on the expected attendance.
Let Sarah know if you would like to come!
If you are a member of the current Beachcombers committee, you are expected to attend.
If you are a member of the club you are welcome to join us as is your right,
but it really isn't that exciting. If there is a specific issue you'd like to raise,
we recommend that you contact your favourite committee member
and they will raise it on your behalf at the AGM.
