Summer '07Well, the 2007 Summer season is now over, so how did we do? Find out here (most recent results first). 2008-01-05STOP THE PRESS: Beachcombers in 2007 Success Shocker! How did we forget to mention this: The Beachcombers came 2nd in the Solent Softball League 2007! And how do you like this: Phil Bedford, our very own rookie, was awarded the Solent Softball League Rookie Of The Year title! Well done, kid!
Phil, relaxing after constructing a sofa out of athletics equipment at the Bristol Tournament. Our President Scott had the following to say in his nomination of Phil: He came along at the very end on last season only because his girlfriend was playing with us. In that time from missing every swing and catch, he now hits good line drives and plays 3rd/ left field. He is ever present at practice sessions, league games and tournaments and is keen to play pitcher. He has pitched full games in the Solent league and in tournaments - when I let him. With his girlfriend he has done additional practice to improve his pitching. He also got his company to provide new Beachcombers shirts for free and on a recent trip to Canada brought back equipment and gear for the club and individuals. So for his performances on and off the field I nominate Phil Bedford. 2007-09-25Last Ball Wraps Up The SeasonThe Beachcombers played at the Solent Last Ball last weekend, a classic end-of-season celebration of softball. We had a pretty dreadful Saturday but made up for it somewhat on Sunday and won the "Fork" trophy. 2007-09-09Beachcombers WIN the Vampire Batters' TournamentAlways a favourite, the Vampire's tournament in Leigh, Surrey, delivered as expected: great venue, great atmosphere, great softball and a great result! The Beachcombers now have the honour of holding on to the precious (and sharp) Vampire trophy until next year. Go us!
2007-08-19Soggy Fun In BristolThe Brighton Beachcombers travelled all the way to Bristol on August 18th-19th. It was a wet and muddy one, but we still camped and laughed our way through the weekend. Most players drove over on Friday evening to start the weekend with some team bonding around the camp fire. Luckily we got most of our drinking and sofa making (!) out of the way before the heavens opened.
We started off with on Saturday morning with wins, but struggled later on with the drizzle and lost a slippery game. We learnt from that game that it's only worth getting wet if you're going to win it, so the whole team pulled together for a great victory in the next game in even wetter conditions. So, with only one loss on Saturday we finished off the round robin on Sunday with more wins. Things were looking sweet for us, but in the first elimination game we faced the good ol' Knicks from the Solent League and unfortunately couldn't keep together the smooth team effort that had kept us winning up till then. All in all, a great bonding weekend and very impressive Beachcombers team play. And we didn't quite leave empty-handed: our girl Sam helped out the Chipmonks and shared the glory of winning the D final!
Martin, Scott, Steve, Warren, Phil, Ben, Sam, Wendy, Emma, Becky, Bridget, Amy and Sarah. 2007-08-12Beachcombers Work Hard In Their Last Two League GamesThe Brighton Beachcombers played their last two 2007 Solent League Games at Hove Park today. The first game was against Dodgers, unbeaten so far in the league. The Dodgers built up an early lead, but could not hold back the Beachcombers' strong hitting and rock-solid fielding. The Beachcombers needed to win this game to keep their league victory options alive, and they did so in style. The second game was against the Sharks. This time our solid hits were not enough to keep up with a combination of Sharks' big hitting and Beachcombers' untidy fielding. What does this mean for our league chances? I wish I knew. But as soon as I find out from our president Scott, I'll let you know.
The Beachcombers fan base was out in force for our league games at Hove Park. From left to right Una, Majorie, Fred and Peter. 2007-07-30Beachcombers Host A Sunny Midball TournamentThe Brighton Beachcombers were unbeaten in the four-way Midball Tournament played at Waterhall, just outside Brighton, at the weekend.
Here is the tournament report from our resident journalist: The Brighton Beachcombers won three games and drew one in a four-way tournament with Solent League rivals at Waterhall on Sunday. The Midball mini-tournament gave the Beachcombers the chance to catch up with rain-delayed fixtures against Portsmouth's Sluggers, the Itchen Knicks and Hursley Hurricanes, but meant they would have to play four matches in one day. After struggling with mistakes in damp conditions against the Sluggers in the first game, the Beachcombers snatched three late runs to win 9-8. The next game was just as dramatic, as the Beachcombers clawed their way to another one-run victory, 11-10, against the Knicks. In the first game of the afternoon's double-header against the Hurricanes, the Beachcombers once again fell behind, but managed to manufacture a 13-11 lead by the last inning. Unlike the previous matches, there was no happy ending and it was the Hurricanes who rallied with two runs to force a gutsy draw. The sun was out for the final game as team president Scott Muir resumed his usual role as the Solent League's leading pitcher. The game also witnessed the debut of Elizabeth Kouklades, who joined the line-up as catcher five days after stepping off a plane from Los Angeles. Having played the sport since she was seven years old, Elizabeth made a run-saving out in the first inning and followed up with her first hit and first run in UK softball as the Beachcombers cruised to a comfortable 15-2 victory against the Hurricanes. Elizabeth was in the crowd when David Beckham made his cameo appearance for the LA Galaxy last month, but he's going to struggle to make as big an impact on the team as she did on Sunday. The unbeaten performance leaves the Beachcombers neck and neck with the Portsmouth Dodgers at the top of the Solent League table. The teams' next fixture at Preston Park on Sunday 12 August looks set to be the title decider. And we also have some words from our President and Captain, Scott: 4 games: 3 wins and a draw. Good results especially given Martin hitting pop-ups all the time in front of his parents. Seriously though, we had quite a squad of players coming and going over the day and playing in different positions: Jeff pitching; Sam on second, Sarah on first to name but a few. Thanks also to all those who stuck around longer than planned, played through injury and put the team first rather than themselves. The results put us in a good position going into the last 2 league games of the season. The next game at home against the Dodgers (last year's winners and our only defeat so far this year) is a must win if we are to have any chance of winning the league. Unfortunately, the draw on Sunday means we must also hope the Dodgers lose another game even if we win the remaining two. Nevertheless, the sun finally shone this summer (red neck) and we were able to pull together and play some excellent softball. Thanks to John for doing a lot of unseen work and ferrying me back and forth, and welcome to Elizabeth who came along despite only just arriving in the country a few days ago. See you Wednesday Scott 2007-07-20Good Weather For DucksThe Windsor tournament, backdrop to many Beachcomber moments of glory, was cancelled at short notice because of the torrential rain. On a positive note, we all learnt a new rule of the game: you can't play it under 2 feet of water. 2007-07-15Beachcombers Not Quite Unbeaten Any MoreThe Beachcombers travelled to Portsmouth on July 15th for two more Solent League games. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep our winning streak going, so we now have 3 wins and 1 loss in the league. No matter, plenty more games to be played at the Midball Tournament we will be hosting on July 29th! 2007-06-26Well-dressed Beachcombers look sharp at BA
A Beachcombers squad in brand new shirts descended on BA Heathrow last weekend.
Here's how our captain Scott saw it: Resplendent in our new Beachcombers shirts which were like by many of the opposition (thanks Phil), the BA tournament last weekend got off to a great start by beating our fellow league team the Itchen Knicks in the first game. The tournament provided an opportunity for players to try new positions (Warren at 3rd and Shortstop), gain more experience (Phil as Pitcher) and to welcome tournament virgins Serge and Emma. Despite the forecasted poor weather it was still sunny enough for Amy and Becky to wear their Jackie O sunglasses on Saturday. Whilst the journey to the Concorde Centre near Heathrow on Sunday was a constant downpour, by the time our first match was due to start the rain had stopped. A theme which carried on throughout the day as the rain stopped in sequence with our games whilst non-game time was spent in the pleasant surroundings of the clubhouse as everyone else playing got soaked. Becky, Sarah and Wendy showed their considerable skills off the field in showing how not to quickly put up the tent to hold our gear. A new pop-up tent was requested by all. By winning 2 out of 3 of our first games we finished 2nd in our group, we progressed to the silver group along with the other 2nd placed group teams. Obviously, it was going to be tougher and whilst we played some good and improving softball the other teams we too strong for us. Our final game was against the team who had come first in the silver group and who had earlier beaten us. By now fielding partnerships and understanding had developed in the team (even husband and wife) and we rose to the challenge. At the bottom of the last inning The Clapham Thunder were 3 behind with their last chance to score. Unfortunately, despite Steve running all over the outfield making catches, the pressure of the situation and their big hitting meant we gave up the remaining runs but did we give them a big scare and they were mighty relieved. Wendy won the team female MVP narrowly piping Becky with her 3 votes over 2 days. 2007-06-14Beachcombers undefeated in Solent League
The first two games were unfortunately cancelled,
but the Beachcombers travelled to Portsmouth last weekend to lay down the challenge at the
door of those Solent folk. Two games, two wins.
2007-05-22Beachcombers battle it out with Comp-B at the GB OpenThe Beachcombers stepped up to the plate against Comp-B teams last weekend to prove that Recreational teams can play hard when they want to. Our resident journalists are preparing the tournament report - come back soon for more! 2007-05-14Beachcombers survive mudfest at Diamond Series 1
It was a soggy one! The tournament was rained off half way through Sunday, but the Beachcombers had plenty of fun up till then!
We must have done something right, because the Manchester Lions had the following to say about us: Hi Combers, It's Lee from Manchester Lions. I'd personally like to thank you guys for coming over to support us in the final this weekend in Slough. It looks like you were supporting the right team as we won it in the end after a nailbiting game. I look forward to playing with you guys in the future. Like ourselves you seem to have a fun team ethos about you. Hopefully when we play you next the weather will be better, I'm sure you're not used to weather like that in Brighton! The Lions are made up that we won the C Comp. Have you seen the size of that trophy!? What made it better is meeting friendly teams like yourselves over the weekend along the way. A word of advice. Remember your bats next time! Hopefully see you all soon. Lee Three cheers for the Lions! In case you are wondering, the comment about the bats refers to someone, who shall remain unnamed, forgetting to bring the team kit bag to the tournament. An easy mistake to make. 2007-04-30Beachcombers come second in the Solent First BallWhat a great start to the season! Well done Beachcombers reaching the final and putting up a great fight. Someone has even created a video montage, featuring our players quite heavily! Our president Scott was there, and here is what he had to say: Hi Beachcombers, The first tournament of the season kicked off with the Firstball in beautiful warm weather. Leaving Brighton around 8am on Sunday in a fleet of cars, the Beachcombers arrived in good time to warm-up for their first match at 10:15. The draw had grouped us with The Shafters from Portsmouth Uni, the Southsea Sharks and the Oxford Spirits. The fixtures also meant we would have an additional 2/3 games depending on the knockout phase. We had 7 men and 6 women players with Tania and Ben new to playing with us and Becky taking on the role of captain for the first time. We stormed the group stage winning all three games comfortably to top our group, which was no easy feat given the quality of the opposition. As a result, we drew The Sluggers, who had won the league last year, in the Semi-final. After about 3 tight innings we started to pull away with our strong hitting and often inspired fielding all round to progress to the final. There we met the Itchen Knicks in a full 7 innings final. In a game which both side traded the lead throughout it all came down to the final inning with the score tied at 10-10 Unfortunately, we failed to score a run in the last and had to prevent them from scoring but their big hitters were next up and we could not stop them from taking the trophy. Nevertheless, our performances throughout the day were excellent and everyone was more than happy with what we had achieved. Team:Captain Becky, Sarah, Bridget, Wendy, Sabine, Tania, Phil, Matt, John, Mark, Scott, Fran, Ben and scorer Jo Scott. 2007-04-18First outdoor of the season. We had a great turnout and a lot of fun at the first outdoor. In the words of our President: Hi Beachcombers, So the Softball season kicked off with the first Wednesday session. It was an excellent turnout of 30+ players with some returning and several newcomers. I hope it wasn’t too daunting for the new players – it will take a few sessions for it to start to fall into place and you will see a rise in your understanding and enjoyment. Check the simplified Idiot's Guide and always ask us questions either via email or at the weekly sessions. Also you will start to know who is who. Competitive games are a part of the season and we play in a league (Sundays from June) and in tournaments (Apr-Sept) at Recreational level. If you are interested in taking your softball further than the Wednesday sessions please let us know! Safety is always important so we will make sure you are ready but from what I saw on Wednesday everybody was there or not far off. Check the calendar for a list of tournaments – we normally take 12 players (6 female & 6 male) for 1-day tournaments and 14 (7&7) for 2-day tournaments. However, if the level of interest is high we can look to enter a 2nd team. Priority will be given to members of the club as they will be registered with BaseballSoftballUK which is required to play in tournaments. Feedback is always welcomed either positive or negative. Please tell us what you think so we can all get the most fun out of Softball. Scott. |
