Old News 2007Is old news, technically, news? Good question. Regardless, here you can find old news items from 2007 (most recent first). 2007-09-30It's Over...Well, that's the 2007 Summer season over, then! No more tournaments, and no more Wednesday practices. So, what do we have to look forward too in the long, cold months? INDOOR SOFTBALL, of course! The Softball Indoor season starts Sunday 04th November from 1pm-4pm at Henfield Leisure Centre. Mark that date in your diaries! Indoor softball is all about playing games and is much more fast and furious than outdoor with lots more opportunity to hit and field the ball due to the smaller teams and enclosed space. This will help all your skills and fitness. Look out for more information right here very soon, including an idiot's guide to indoor, a map showing how to get there, and more information about all the good stuff coming up in the Winter season: scoring clinics, one-to-one coaching... you name it, let's do it. 2007-10-23Beachcombers Hallowe'en Party7.30 Saturday 27th October, at Wendy's house. PLEASE WEAR FANCY DRESS, or come as you are (scary enough, really) We will be fund-raising for a replacement bat for next season's tournaments, so bring some cash, and BYOB! We will raffling one of Wendy's prize carved Jack-o-lanterns!! PLEASE RSVP to Sam by Wednesday 24th Oct so we know how much to organise. LOOKING FORWARD to seeing your scary selves! How to get there: 2007-09-25Quick UpdateWell, there's been a lot going on in the last few weeks, and not enough updates on the website! Here are some quick items before the webmaster jets off on holiday. The Beachcombers WON the Vampire Batters' Tournament! More on that in a few weeks. The Beachcombers played at the Solent Last Ball last weekend, a classic end-of-season celebration of softball. We had a pretty dreadful Saturday but made up for it somewhat on Sunday and won the "Fork" trophy. Wednesday practices have ended, but some players are keen to meet up this wednesday (26th) for some softball/food/drink as appropriate. Please contact Becky for more details (I hope she doesn't mind). 2007-09-06Social And Softball This WeekendWe are playing the 1-day-only Vampire Batters' tournament this Sunday in Leigh, Surrey. And what better way to get the team fired up than going out for a meal and drinks the night before? We are going to meet at 6:45pm-ish in the Fish Bowl bar on East Street, and then moving on at 7:30pm to the Kuta restaurant (used to be Krakatoa) round the corner in Pool Valley, where the Mega Bus and National Express bus stop is. We will be sitting on the floor, so ladies no short skirts and sorry boys, those skimpy shorts just won’t do. If you arrive at the restaurant before the rest of us, the booking is in the name of Sarah. Both events this weekend are organised by Sarah, so let her know if you're coming! 2007-09-05Name And Shame That PlayerOur head coach (may he be praised) promised at our practice game this Wendesday that the losing team would be named and shamed for all to see on the website, so here it goes.
Does this look like a team that can win a game of softball? It turns out not! And those names in full: John, Becky, Liam (new player, he sure landed in the deep end!), Bridget, Phil, Wendy (ask her about her play on 2nd), Joe. (Jason and Martin not pictured, they both deny all responsibility). 2007-08-19Soggy Fun In BristolThe Brighton Beachcombers travelled all the way to Bristol on August 18th-19th. It was a wet and muddy one, but we still camped and laughed our way through the weekend. Find out more in the results page.
2007-08-12Beachcombers Work Hard In Their Last Two League GamesThe Brighton Beachcombers played their last two 2007 Solent League Games at Hove Park today. The first game was against Dodgers, unbeaten so far in the league. The Dodgers built up an early lead, but could not hold back the Beachcombers' strong hitting and rock-solid fielding. The Beachcombers needed to win this game to keep their league victory options alive, and they did so in style. The second game was against the Sharks. This time our solid hits were not enough to keep up with a combination of Sharks' big hitting and Beachcombers' untidy fielding. What does this mean for our league chances? I wish I knew. But as soon as I find out from our president Scott, I'll let you know.
The Beachcombers fan base was out in force for our league games at Hove Park. From left to right Una, Majorie, Fred and Peter. 2007-08-09Crucial League Games To Be Played At Hove ParkWell folks, they've done a great job trying to clear the Preston Park field after Pride, but there are still too many bits of glass and bottle tops so our crucial league decider games will be played at Hove Park instead. Here is a map of how to get there. The softball diamond is on the West edge of the park, next to the basketball courts. If you need further directions or a lift to the games, just let us know!. See you there, bright and early at 10am for a warmup! 2007-08-07Normal Service Resumed At Preston ParkIt looks like the Pride was a heavy one, but they've done a great job cleaning up, so our practice is back at our main field in Preston Park. Hope to see you there! 2007-07-31URGENT: Change Of Venue This WeekBecause of the preparations for the Pride Parade this weekend, practice on Wednesday August 1st will be at Hove Park instead of Preston Park. Here is a map of how to get there. The softball diamond is on the West edge of the park, next to the basketball courts. If you need further directions or a lift to the practice, just let us know!. 2007-07-30Beachcombers Host A Sunny Midball TournamentThe Brighton Beachcombers were unbeaten in the four-way Midball Tournament played at Waterhall, just outside Brighton, at the weekend.
The sun was shining, the teams were there and there was some great ball being played all around. Read our full report here! 2007-07-26Beachcombers To Host Midball Tournament This WeekendThe Midball is ON this weekend at Waterhall, where the Solent League teams will be coming down for some catch-up league games. Let's play! 2007-07-20Good Weather For DucksThe Windsor tournament, backdrop to many Beachcomber moments of glory, was cancelled at short notice because of the torrential rain. On a positive note, we all learnt a new rule of the game: you can't play it under 2 feet of water. 2007-07-15Beachcombers Not Quite Unbeaten Any MoreThe Beachcombers travelled to Portsmouth on July 15th for two more Solent League games. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep our winning streak going, so we now have 3 wins and 1 loss in the league. No matter, plenty more games to be played at the Midball Tournament we will be hosting on July 29th! 2007-06-26Well-dressed Beachcombers look sharp at BAA Beachcombers squad in brand new shirts descended on BA Heathrow last weekend.
Read all about it here.
2007-06-14Beachcombers undefeated in Solent League
The first two games were unfortunately cancelled,
but the Beachcombers travelled to Portsmouth last weekend to lay down the challenge at the
door of those Solent folk. Two games, two wins.
2007-05-22Beachcombers battle it out with Comp-B at the GB OpenThe Beachcombers stepped up to the plate against Comp-B teams last weekend to prove that Recreational teams can play hard when they want to. Find out how it went here. 2007-05-14Beachcombers survive mudfest at Diamond Series 1
It was a soggy one! The tournament was rained off half way through Sunday, but the Beachcombers had plenty of fun up till then!
Read the full report here. 2007-04-30Beachcombers come second in the Solent First BallA great result to start off the season! See the Results page for a full report of our performance. 2007-04-23Social event: curry after practice on May 2nd.It's hungry work, this softball, so who fancies a curry after the practice on Wednesday, May 2nd? In the words of our Social Organiser: Hi Beachcombers, Following practice this Wednesday (2nd May) we will be going to the Raj Pavillion Indian Restaurant, instead of the Open House. The table is booked for 8:30pm in my name, Sarah. The food is really good,it's been tried and test many times and it'll be a nice way to start the season :) Just to get an idea of numbers please let me know if you can come. If you're not sure where to go, the Raj Pavillion is very close to Preston Park. It's on the on the London Road/A23 out of Brighton, just north of Preston Circus. Here's a map. Hope to see you there, Sarah. 2007-04-26Solent First Ball Tournament this Sunday! On Sunday April 29th we will be playing our first tournament of the season, the Solent First Ball in Portsmouth. We currently have about enough male and female players going, but get in touch with Becky if you fancy coming along anyway. We particularly recommend you come along if you're new to the game and want to see what a real game in a real tournament looks like. It's a great fun tournament where players from the Solent league test their rusty arms for the first time in the season. 4 games guaranteed, 5 if we play well enough! Here are the full tournament details, including the game schedule. We're all car sharing up there, so I'm sure we can fit you in. Talk to Becky! 2007-04-23Change of venue - the circus is in town! The circus has arrived in town, which is a good thing if you like circi but not so good if you want to play softball on the field they've camped on.
So, from Wednesday April 25th until the end of May, we will be playing on our second field,
marked on the map as
2007-04-19The season has started with a bang! And so it begins for another season: sunshine, green grass and about 35 keen softballers on a field in Preston Park. Find out how it all went here. Want to join the fun? Come out and Play Ball! |
